Denver has been one of the fastest-growing startup markets in the past couple of years, attracting a growing stream of emerging tech startups and entrepreneurs. Luckily for tech startups in Denver and surrounding areas looking for investments, you don’t need to go far. 

Venture capital firms in the Denver area invest heavily in the local market. There are currently 63 VC firms in Denver which have made 39 investments in 2020, according to Crunchbase

We’ve put together a list of the top VC firms in Denver and surrounding metropolitan areas to point tech startups in Denver in the right direction when looking for an investment.

Stout Street Capital

Founded in 2016, Stout Street Capital promotes itself as a seed-stage fund that invests in underserved markets, particularly in the Rocky Mountain area. The firm’s investing portfolio shows that Stout Street capital invests in innovative tech startups. So far, the firm has invested in five startups in 2020, the latest being a series A funding round for St. Louis-based Textel in October. 

SpringTime Ventures

A VC firm that prioritizes investing in early-stage startups, SpringTime Ventures invests in a range of industries. The firm believes that the Rocky Mountain region has untapped potential and primarily invests in companies from this area. SpringTime Ventures is currently the leading VC firm in investments for VC firms based out of Denver, with seven investments made in 2020, according to Crunchbase. Their last investment was for Denver-based Highwing in November.

Ibex

Founded in 2003, Ibex is an investment firm that seeks out opportunities and companies that wouldn’t typically receive funding because it would be considered too difficult or unique. The VC firm invests in a wide range of industries and companies in different investment stages. Ibex has invested in four companies this year, the latest being a series B funding round for San-Francisco-based Panoply as a lead investor this past October.

Foundry Group

This Boulder-based VC firm was ranked number one in Denver Business Journal’s list of venture capital firms in the Denver area. Foundry Group is a VC firm that focuses on making investments for early-stage information technology companies. Currently, Foundry Group has invested in 15 companies this year, the most recent occurring in November for a series A funding round for Boulder-based ColdQuanta.

Altira Group

Founded in 1996, Altira Group has built a strong reputation in the Denver area and regularly makes an appearance on lists of the top venture capital firms. BuiltIn Colorado, for example, has the firm listed as one of the must-know Colorado-based VC firms. Altira Group focuses on investments in oil and gas services along with tech startups. In 2020, Altria made two investments, the latest occurring in September for the Seattle-based Seeqs for a series B funding round.

Grotech Ventures

Listed in both the previously mentioned BuiltIn Colorado list and the Denver Business Journal ranking, Grotech Ventures is an early-stage VC firm that invests mainly in high-growth tech companies. With five investments in 2020 so far, the firm states that it invests between half a million and five million for funding rounds. Their latest investment was for a series B funding round for Baltimore-based Apkudo.

Boulder Ventures

Another VC firm with its headquarters in Boulder, Boulder Ventures is a well-recognized early-stage investor with a focus on IT and biotech companies located in Colorado. With only one investment so far in 2020 for a series B funding round for Boulder-based LightDeck Diagnostic, Boulder Ventures has a preferred range of $5 million to $30 million for investments, according to the Denver Business Journal. Boulder Ventures has made 96 investments since its founding in 1995.

Matchstick Ventures

Looking to provide early-stage investment and support for entrepreneurs, Matchstick Ventures invests in startups in the software and e-commerce industries according to their Crunchbase statistics. The VC firm has invested in eight funding rounds this year, and the latest happened in October. Matchsticks Ventures invested in Denver-based StackHawk in their series A funding round.
